What requires emergency dental care?

Sudden and Severe Tooth Pain

Spontaneous tooth pain is one of the clearest signs that something is wrong with your oral health. It can be temporary or chronic and can affect one or more teeth simultaneously. Pain is often associated with infection, a tooth crack, deep caries, or a damaged filling. If tooth pain persists, immediate action is needed to prevent further damage to the nerve and tissues. It is important to remember that teeth are anatomically very close to the brain, and an untreated infection can spread further into the body, posing risks to vital organs such as the heart or brain.

Swelling in the Face or Gums

Swelling is a serious symptom that should never be ignored or attempted to be treated at home. Such symptoms may indicate a serious infection or abscess that can spread further into the body. A dental visit is recommended as soon as possible to initiate the necessary treatment and stop the spread of infection.

Dental Injuries (Knocked-out or Broken Tooth)

This is one of the most alarming dental situations, but correct and timely action can save a tooth. If a tooth is knocked out, remain calm, try to find it, and store it in milk, saline solution, or, if no other options are available, in your saliva. If a tooth is knocked out in a child, it is not recommended to keep it in the child’s mouth due to the risk of aspiration. Contact us immediately, as prompt action significantly increases the chance of successful tooth reimplantation. A broken tooth, on the other hand, not only looks unaesthetic but can also be very sensitive and sharp, injuring the tongue or inside of the cheek, so tooth restoration, polishing, or aesthetic correction is necessary.

Wisdom Teeth and Related Problems

Improperly growing or partially erupted wisdom teeth often cause pain, inflammation, and infection that require surgical intervention. Wisdom teeth usually begin to erupt between approximately 17 and 25 years of age, and it is during this period that related complaints are most commonly observed. If you feel pressure or pain in the back of your jaw, or difficulty opening your mouth, wisdom teeth may be the cause. In such cases, specialist consultation is necessary.

What does emergency assistance include?

Our primary goal in acute situations is to eliminate the cause of pain and stabilize the patient’s condition. Upon arrival at SmileArt dental clinic, you will be greeted by understanding staff and professional dentists who will take care of you. The first step is always accurate diagnosis, using digital X-rays and other methods to precisely determine the cause of tooth pain. This allows us to develop the most effective plan and proceed purposefully.

We understand that patients in pain desire immediate relief, so our priority is to ensure that procedures are painless, using effective anesthetics. Depending on the diagnosis, urgent tooth filling may be performed in cases of deep caries, or urgent root canal treatment if the infection has affected the tooth nerve. We also provide assistance in emergency cases, such as a broken ceramic restoration or front tooth, offering temporary or permanent restoration.

What to do until your dental appointment?

Often, some time passes before you can get to a dental clinic. There are several things you can do at home to alleviate your condition until your visit.

  • Pain relief: If you experience discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers, strictly following the instructions. Remember that medication only suppresses symptoms and does not treat the cause, so a visit to the doctor is mandatory.
  • Swelling: If you notice swelling, you can apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek, which will help reduce swelling and slightly calm the pain. Under no circumstances should you apply a warm compress, as heat can promote the spread of infection. In case of swelling, it is important to see a dentist as quickly as possible.
  • Mouth rinse: In case of a broken or cracked tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean it of food debris and maintain a clean environment around the damaged tooth.

Important: If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, or severe and rapidly increasing swelling around your jaw or mouth, call 113 immediately or go to the nearest hospital emergency department, as these symptoms may indicate a life-threatening condition.
